During my academic journey, I adhered to the conventional rules: sitting in my chair neatly, maintaining precision in my work, and avoiding replicating others’ efforts. These guidelines served me well through university and early professional experiences, forming the foundation of my disciplined approach. However, the rigidity of these principles was shattered when I participated in the HeArts of Youth training sessions.
Contrary to the traditional norms, the atmosphere in these sessions encouraged us to break free from the conventional constraints. We were urged to abandon the traditional classroom setup, opting instead for sitting or lying on the floor and embracing disruptions as we delved into the realm of artistic expression. Initially jarring, this departure from the norm eventually became a liberating experience, fostering a sense of freedom as we redirected our focus inward, exploring our innermost thoughts and emotions – a dimension often neglected in traditional art and dance forms.
Having grown up in the structured world of ballet, where meticulous attention to posture, movements, and direction is paramount, I approached the dance and movement therapy workshops with preconceived notions. I anticipated a regimented environment, with instructors barking corrections at participants in a strict, hierarchical manner. To my surprise, the reality was quite the opposite.
The workshops began with a departure from conventional dance classes, as we engaged in free-form movements, gradually escalating into more sporadic and abstract expressions. The group dynamics were also refreshing, with participants forming connections and collaborating on exercises aimed at combining inner reflection with collective creativity. My group, driven by the goal of enhancing inner thought and collaboration, crafted two exercises that seamlessly integrated these skills, recognizing their value for the intended audience of the workshops.
Transitioning to the art workshops, we delved into collage-making activities guided by instructors. These exercises explored diverse themes, prompting us to focus on our surroundings and contemplate our personal identities and belief systems. Drawing upon our varied artistic backgrounds, we were then tasked with creating our own workshops, revealing a wealth of experience that enriched the collective creative process.
Reflecting on these immersive experiences, I find myself profoundly grateful for the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of workshop development. The encounter with diverse individuals and the acquisition of practical skills have debunked the notion that the conventional educational paradigm always holds true. Embracing the unfamiliar has proven to be a catalyst for personal growth, challenging preconceptions and instilling a newfound appreciation for unconventional approaches.
In conclusion, these workshops have been transformative, teaching me that venturing beyond the familiar can yield profound insights and unexpected lessons. With a heightened sense of anticipation, I eagerly anticipate my future workshops, anticipating not only the acquisition of new skills but also the invaluable connections that await in the realm of uncharted experiences.
